Student & Parent Loans

What Are The Steps For Students and/or Parents Desiring Loan Aid?

When you accept the federal Stafford Loan or PLUS Loan offered to you on your financial aid award letter, the college will process your loan through the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) or your selected guarantor. Stafford Loan

First, all students desiring a Stafford Loan must file the FAFSA. After you receive your Financial Aid award letter, accept the Stafford Loan(s) on your award notification and return it to our office. Look below to see which category your student falls into:

  • If you are a first time borrower of a Stafford Loan:

You must complete both the Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note and an Entrance Interview:

  • The Entrance Interview can be completed online at www.newpaltz.edu/loancounseling or in person by contacting the Office of the Student Loan Coordinator at 845-257-3198, HAB 302.
  • The Stafford Loan Master Promissory note can be completed at www.hesc.com. Simply click on "Students, complete your E-MPN."

  • If you have received a Stafford Loan at another college, but not SUNY New Paltz:

You should complete the Stafford Entrance Interview. An Entrance Interview is required at each new school you attend. A new Master Promissory Note is generally not required if you have borrowed a loan that was guaranteed through New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (NYSHESC). Visit www.hesc.com should you wish to see if you already have a loan guaranteed through NYSHESC.

  • If you have received a Stafford Loan at SUNY New Paltz for a previous semester:

Your Stafford Loan funds will be ordered by the Financial Aid Office. Your Stafford Master Promissory Note and Entrance Interview are already completed. Simply return your Financial Aid award letter to the Office of Financial Aid.

 

Parent Loan (PLUS)

First, all families desiring a Parent Loan must file the FAFSA. After you receive your Financial Aid award letter, accept the PLUS Loan on your award notification and return it to our office.

To complete your PLUS Loan application, log onto www.hesc.com and click on, "Parents, complete your E-MPN." If you do not have access to a computer or wish to complete a paper application, call HESC at (888)NYHESC (888-697-4372) or (800)445-5234 (TDD) to request a paper application.

Upon approval, the lender you have selected will electronically submit the funds to SUNY New Paltz. The student will be notified when the loan proceeds are disbursed the student's account.

Credit approval or denial is determined upon application at hesc.com. If a parent is denied credit to borrow, provide documentation of the denial to our office to request possible additional unsubsidized Stafford loan funding for the student ($4,000 Freshman & Sophomore; $5,000 Junior & Seniors).
