SUBJECT: Will you need financial aid to help pay for college next year?

Dear Student:

It's that time of year again! It's time to start planning for the 2012-2013 academic year. It is important to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early to avoid processing delays. March 15th is the priority deadline for Fall 2012 financial aid. If you plan to apply for financial aid for Summer 2012, the FAFSA should be completed by the priority deadline of March 1st. You can complete the FAFSA on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Students filing the FAFSA after the deadlines stated above will be considered late applicants and may not have financial aid credits/deductions on their bill at the time the bill is due and should therefore be prepared to make alternate payment arrangements.

To streamline the financial aid application process, the simplest, quickest, and most accurate way to provide information on the FAFSA is for financial aid applicants and their parents to electronically file their 2011 federal income tax returns two weeks before the FAFSA is filed. This will allow the most accurate information to be included on the FAFSA and for the FAFSA-IRS Data Retrieval Process to be available when your FAFSA on the Web is completed.

This simple and time saving feature allows financial aid applicants and their parents to retrieve, directly from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), certain income and information from 2011 income tax returns and to automatically transfer that information to the FAFSA application.

You will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete the FAFSA. To obtain or retrieve a PIN please visit www.pin.ed.gov.

If you have any questions about the FAFSA you can contact the Federal Processing Center at 1-800-433-3243. An informational "2012-2013 How to Apply for Financial Aid on the Web" brochure is available at http://www.newpaltz.edu/financialaid/deadlines.html.

It is more important than ever to be proactive about the business side of your education. Help us to help you by filing early and submitting requested paperwork in a timely fashion. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Office of Financial Aid
