How does participating in extra-curricular activities enhance your education?
![]()
My participation in extra-curricular activities has contributed to my education by allowing me to build on the skills necessary in academic success. With so many on-campus clubs, organizations and events, there's always something fun and productive to do. Being bored is definitely not a part of my vocabulary. One of the exceptional organizations that have contributed to my education is Toastmasters, a public speaking organization on campus. The support of Toastmasters has allowed me to become much more comfortable with class discussions and presentations. I have also gained great leadership skills and made fantastic friends by being an active member of this outstanding organization. This group has also made me a more well-rounded person.
Extras:
Mentor: My mentors are Beth King, a Career Resource Center adviser and Zelbert Moore, a professor in the Black Studies Department. King has encouraged me to explore the career prospects of my field of study by participating in internships and Moore has inspired me to reach my highest academic potential.
Inspirations: My family, and especially my dad, has always inspired me by making me believe in myself.
Awards/Achievements: I have been on the Dean’s List for the past three semesters. During the spring 2008 semester, I was inducted in the Educational Opportunity Program’s Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) Honor Society. I am also proud of having learned American Sign Language at New Paltz, which has added to my metalinguistic awareness of Creole, French and English.
