Faces of New Paltz

What brought you to New Paltz? How does participating in athletics enhance your education?

  Artie Williams

The thing that brought me to New Paltz was actually my sister Silver. She attended New Paltz and also played on the women's basketball team earning the all-time lead in scoring and rebounding; which I soon plan to take over. Having a family connection to New Paltz means everything to me. I have a reputation and legacy to keep up. So far, my athletic experience here at New Paltz has been great. Participating in sports has enhanced my social skills, as well as my overall performance as a student-athlete. I’m now a tri-sport athlete competing in basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. Basketball is my main sport though. I’ve earned the All-Section team and have been team captain since my sophomore year. I was also the leading scorer and rebounder on the team. Athletics have enhanced my education not only in the classroom, but in life. Through athletics, I've learned from my experiences to better apply myself.

Inspiration:  My mother and my sister Silver

Hobbies: Reading, writing short stories and teaching my niece new things.

Little-known facts: I'm the seventh child of nine and the fourth out of my siblings to go to college.

  Silver Williams

Artie’s older sister Silver Williams ’03 (Secondary Education – English) is ranked fourth in the college’s history for scoring with 946 points and second in rebounds with 671. As a student-athlete, she was a second-team, All-SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Competition) selection in 2002. She received the college’s Heinz Ahlmeyer Award, which honors athletes who go above and beyond for their teammates, in 2003. In March 2008, Williams was inducted into the Athletic Department’s Carol Eckman Society, which recognizes the continued contributions of former female-athletes to the next generation of female athletes at New Paltz. Today, Williams is an English teacher at Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh, N.Y.
