Julie O'Niell
After graduating from law school, Julie O'Niell found herself working 75 hours a week as a corporate attorney in a Park Avenue law firm. After leaving that firm and spending a few years drafting and negotiating contracts for an entertainment law firm, she was sure she needed a career change and was determined to become a teacher.
"I thought about what I really love and what makes me happy, and I love literature and love kids," said Julie.
Julie is now pursuing a master's of arts in teaching (MAT), specializing in English. She supports herself at the same time by working as a consultant for a cable television company. "I draft and negotiate contracts from home," said Julie.
As a student, Julie's curriculum is divided between education and literature classes. "I like that half my classes are in my discipline and half are in education; I'm learning in tandem," said Julie.
Thus far, most of Julie's learning experience has been in her graduate classes or through teacher observations, but soon she will get the chance to student teach, something that has motivated her since the day she decided to go into teaching.
"I can't wait to get into the classroom and teach," said Julie.
