For Rob Holtzer ’80, pursuing a double major in business administration and speech communication at New Paltz was all part of his game plan.
Today, Holtzer is the vice president for national sales at the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network. He says the skills he learned from both of his majors have played a big role in his career. Holtzer is responsible for all sales acquired outside of New York and travels every other week to cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles to meet and communicate with clients looking to advertise on the national television station.
Holtzer is also taking his experiences of applying and working for such television companies as NBC, FOX and YES, and writing a book on interviewing techniques for job seekers. He says he has already helped 56 people get jobs, usually better positions, and he’d like to reach more.
The most important lesson Holtzer says a person can learn about being interviewed is how to pitch themselves to potential employers. He says prospective employees need to practice the art of being interviewed and doing their homework about the company they’re interviewing at. Holtzer says he always knew as much about the company as the people who worked there.
“I always walked into an interview loaded with a lot of information and was ready to ask my own questions,” he said.
Holtzer says he plans to come back to New Paltz and share his secrets with students on the verge of entering the job market.
