This month, Yubelkis Gonzalez will become one of the first members of her family to graduate from college. Yubelkis was motivated by her own interests to attend college, but the experiences of her family have motivated her to complete her degree.
After two years, Yubelkis' mother was forced to drop out of college because she could no longer afford to attend, and her father never had the opportunity.
Yubelkis is very close to her family and views them as her support system, though they are not her only support. As a community development assistant (CDA) for the department of Residence Life, Yubelkis has become very close to her staff members. "They're my family away from home," said Yubelkis.
As a CDA, Yubelkis helps her building's resident director, coordinates her building's Night Host program, and helps promote health and safety in the residence hall.
For Yubelkis, part of her health and safety initiative has been sex education. In order to learn more about sex education, she attended Planned Parenthood workshops and has taken the knowledge that she acquired from those workshops and applied it to programs in her building and around campus to educate others.
