Why did the Digital Media Production program at New Paltz appeal to you?

Ever since high school, I've always wanted to get involved with either film or video production. This probably stemmed from when I helped film a program my dad made for our town’s local broadcasting station. It was called “Crabby Old Man in the Basement,” and he talked about global and local topics related to politics, the economy, war, and art – though it was all done in a very satirical, comical manner. Occasionally he’d bring some of our local neighbors on the show as guest stars to weigh in on the discussions. Since then, the idea of creating your own content, presenting it in a theatrical manner where you control what happens, and later showcasing it in the form of either a video or TV show has always kind of stuck with me. I wanted to try my hand at it, so I figured the best thing to do was to get a degree in that field!

You are a member of the New Paltz Outing Club. What kinds of excursions have you taken with them?

New Paltz Outing Club trips have consisted of hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, caving, white water rafting, skiing, and more. Practically any physical activity related to the outdoors, they do it. I love the club because it offers students the rare opportunity to just get away from the pressures of college life and relax in a natural setting. Just the act of getting some exercise outdoors in broad daylight can do wonders in terms of relieving stress. Plus, the sense of community the club offers is an added plus. I’ve accumulated plenty of friendships during my time spent on trips with these kids, and I am grateful for it.

Are there any professors who have inspired you at New Paltz?

I recently started taking classes with (communication and media professors) Greg Bray and Dan Labbato. Even in the short time that I’ve known them, they’ve made a great impression on me. I’ve become far more knowledgeable in the field as a result of their expertise. I also appreciate their understanding towards students’ own anxieties and ailments when it comes to being a busy college student.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m trying to get my hands on an internship. For the past month I’ve been sending out cover letters left and right to big companies like Weinstein and AMC Networks. In the long run, however, I’d love to be able write and direct films and become my own Orson Welles. I want to have a chance at creating something with total artistic control over what goes into it. Movies, however, require quite a bit of money (shocker!) as well as a great deal of connections with those in the film industry. I’ll just have to be patient with whatever job I’m initially offered and work my way up from there. Whether it’s being a grip, a boom operator, or even an intern, I’ll be grateful. Either way, I’m confident in my own abilities to create a true work of art, and that in future, all of this ambition will pay off!
