Faces of New Paltz

Einav Zamir is drawn to a life filled with art.

She arrived at New Paltz ready to pursue a degree in fine arts. Einav soon realized her passion for art extended beyond creating it; she wanted to teach others to see art the way she did.

"Art is about evaluating the world around you and redefining it [the world] through art," she said.

At New Paltz's Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Einav has found great opportunities to educate others about her favorite subject. She said the professional atmosphere at the museum has allowed her to develop her skills as an art historian.

Einav has moved up the ranks from a gallery assistant to giving docent tours. She is often inspired by the reactions of the people on her tours, and has even incorporated visitor's comments about the art into her presentations. She loves to see the different ways in which art moves people.

Einav is working with museum educator Judi Esmond to create a series of docent tours on the museums latest exhibits. They are also working on a program called "My Poetic Landscape," which introduces New Paltz Middle School students to art through writing exercises.

Einav is active in the Art History Association on campus. As public relations coordinator for the group, she has publicized a number of fundraising campaigns, including the current sale of lollipops decorated with images from the museum's permanent collection.

She says New Paltz has been the perfect place for her to flourish in her chosen field. In her time at New Paltz, Einav has become interested in the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement of landscape painters.

"There is such a strong artistic background in this area and the museum does a great job of exhibiting it," she said.
