What is your favorite class to teach at New Paltz?

  Mike Otis:

I'd have to say my favorite class is the Senior Design Project, which is our undergraduate engineering capstone course. This seems to be the most challenging for me as a professor since each problem is different and has its own set of constraints.  This past year, I have had the good fortune to work with The Solar Energy Consortium, a group of public/private entities working to increase and develop solar energy opportunities in the Hudson Valley, on several meaningful projects with some very good engineering students and, so far, the results have exceeded my expectations. We have some very capable engineers here at SUNY New Paltz!

Influences:  I would definitely have to say my dad.  He is one of the most capable men I have ever met. He is a true engineer!

Hobbies:  I really enjoy the outdoors, whether it involves hiking/biking in the nearby "Gunks,” skiing in the Catskills, boating in the Adirondacks, snowmobiling in the Laurentides or motorcycling just about anywhere.

Little-known facts:  I raced motorcycles, snowmobiles and mini-sprint cars in my younger years.  For extra spending money over the summer, I have driven dump trucks and tractor trailers and have even worked at a local watering hole: P&Gs!

Community involvement:  I grew up in this community and it seems that I know just about everybody as I walk through town.  This town and its community have provided me with many opportunities.  I am grateful that I can give something back by helping to educate our children up to young adults, whether they are elementary/middle schoolers interested in robotics, high schoolers interested in exploring engineering, or community college or university students interested in career and life choices.
