John McEnrue
What have you done that contributes to green and/or sustainability initiatives here at New Paltz?
My office (Facilities Management Office of Design and Construction) is committed to creating sustainable facilities that enhance our primary educational mission while neutralizing, if not reducing, our carbon footprint. The staff recognizes that our individual actions have a global impact.
Notable projects that the campus will soon embark upon will include the renovation of Old Main, home to the SUNY New Paltz School of Education, and the expansion of our Student Union Building. I'm elated about creating the first SUNY New Paltz LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified project with the Old Main renovation.
We're implementing a construction waste management plan for Old Main that will either recycle or salvage 50% of the demolition debris. In turn, much of our new materials proposed for installation are derived from recycled content including the steel for columns and beams, and finishes such as carpet, vinyl flooring, and acoustic ceiling panels.
The Student Union Building expansion is also incorporating both natural and recycled materials. In addition, the design utilizes daylight harvesting, a technique that maximizes solar gain while minimizing the need for artificial lighting. With a combination of heat recovery HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) systems, natural ventilation and radiant flooring, the objective is to have a zero energy increase with this addition.
Hobbies: Downhill skiing, water skiing, swimming, exploring Lake Champlain in either a 1958 Thompson or a 1978 Glastron.
Community involvement:
• Town of Rosendale Planning Board
• Ulster County Historic Society: Treasurer & Chair of Finance Committee
• Shaker Museum and Library: Board member and Chair of Construction committee
Quick Facts: I received a BSCE in Architectural Engineering from the University of Vermont & University of Wyoming. I'm currently pursuing my MBA here at SUNY New Paltz, where I've worked for three years.
