Faces of New Paltz
Maria Kastrappi's home is Cyprus; a laid-back island in the Mediterranean Sea full of beautiful beaches, amazing food, and rich culture. Her second home is New Paltz.
Maria came to New Paltz three years ago after hearing about the college from someone in her village. She visited, fell in love with it, and soon became a student here.
Since arriving at New Paltz, she has become a resident assistant in Scudder Hall, where she enjoys interacting with students and reaching out to them when they need help.
Her role as a resident assistant is just one way in which she helps others. As a communication disorders major, Maria observes children at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and local elementary schools as a part of her curriculum.
Growing up with a disabled cousin and a mother who is an assistant at a school for disabilities, Maria knew that she wanted to study communication disorders.
After graduating, she hopes to return to Cyprus, work in local schools, and eventually open a private practice with other international graduates of New Paltz.
Interests: Spending time with her residents and visiting the Mohonk Preserve.
Influences: Maria's resident assistants from her first year at New Paltz and her high school French teacher.
