John Hauser

On and off the basketball court college senior John Hauser is focused.

When on the court as a forward guard for the New Paltz Men’s basketball team, John is all about blocking his opponents’ shots and supporting his team.

“You need to have good teamwork in order to succeed,” John said.

John has been a staple on the Hawks starting lineup for four seasons. This year, he was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN Academic All-America Third Basketball Team. John, who has been captain for three years, is the first honoree from New Paltz.

He finished his basketball career with 1,299 points and 551 rebounds. His career best was 31 points.

John is also a Men's Basketball Team Student Athlete Mentor (SAM), a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Board and is a coach for the New Paltz town recreation league.

“Being a leader on the basketball court has taught me a lot about responsibility and working with others,” he said.

John has played basketball since he was in high school, following a family tradition – all of four of his brothers play.

From mid-October to the end of February, life is a balancing act for the accounting and finance major. He says he’s learned how to manage his time well and the key is focus.

“I make sure my work is done before I get out on the court,” he said.

John is following another family tradition – pursuing a career in business. His older brother works in finance and his uncle is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

In May, John will begin his new career working for Ernst & Young, an accounting firm on Long Island. He already prepped for the position by working for the company last summer as an intern.
