Ovid's "Metamosphoses" is brought to light by playwright Mary Zimmerman in an adaptation that juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary, the comic with the sorrowful. Much of the play's power resides in Zimmerman's story-telling. She deftly combines beautiful language with arresting visual images. The entire play is set in and alongside a large swimming pool as a selection of Ovid's tales is told. Primary themes are love and loss and caution and recklessness, the gods and the humans. "Metamorphoses" is suitable for middle-school audiences and up.
