Mawulekumi Ayao Tokponwey (Formerly Calvin S. Baker Jr.) was born on Thursday, Jan. 4, 1966 in Brookdale Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. to Calvin S. Baker Sr. and Jeanette Baker. Mawulekumi lived all over Brooklyn with his two siblings; including the Navy Yard Area (The Farragut Projects), Bedford- Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Flatbush, and for a few years, Harlem.
Mawulekumi attended Erasmus Hall High School and graduated in 1985. He attended SUNY Cortland, transferred to, and then graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1990 with a B.A. in Black Studies and minors in Sociology and Education. He became a NYC Dept. of Education Social Studies Educator in the fall of 1990. Mawulekumi was hired at Erasmus Hall High School as a Social Studies Teacher in the fall of 1990. Mawulekumi now teaches Social Studies and law at the High School for Legal Studies. Mawulekumi began his Graduate work at Brooklyn College in 1997, graduating with an M.A. in Secondary Education/ Social Studies in 1999.
Mawulekumi is currently on sabbatical from teaching to complete his second Masters Degree in New York Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. Married for almost 21 years, he has owned a four story brownstone in Bedford- Stuyvesant since 1996. In 2011, Mawulekumi started two companies, MAAT's View Photography and Creative Outlets. Both businesses were created to explore and support Mawulekumi's creative photographic interests. Mawulekumi's future plans are to retire from teaching, earn his PhD, continue traveling the world, and expand his photography business.
