Engineering Story

3D Computational Models of Flagella With and Without Hispid Hairs

09/13/2011

Olga was born and raised in Russia, came to SUNY NP in Fall 2007, and is a double major in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.
During the summer of 2011, Olga participated in her third Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Mississippi State University. Under the guidance of Dr. Xingzhou Yang, Olga conducted research in computational mathematical biology. Specifically, she worked on 3D numerical simulation of microscopic flagellar movement in viscous fluids. Flagellar are hair like organelle projecting from the cell body of many microorganisms. This research allowed her to successfully build two different flagella structures and simulate their motility due to both external and torque forces applied at the head of the flagella using MATLAB software. In the future, the obtained results can be useful in micro-robot design on human-related medical applications.
