The Department of Digital Media and Journalism is one of the largest academic departments on campus, with more than 350 majors in Journalism, Digital Media Production and Digital Media Management. The department has 12 full-time faculty, many of whom are also industry professionals. It represents a discipline that combines methods from both the humanities and social sciences in its study of how people share and represent ideas through the mass media. The faculty of Digital Media and Journalism value freedom of speech and the press as tools for informing and promoting a democratic dialogue.
The Department's overall mission is to draw from the traditional strengths of a Liberal Arts education and prepare its majors for graduate degrees to support their intellectual and professional growth. Faculty also play a significant role at the Legislative Gazette, a weekly newspaper published by journalism students in Albany, which focuses on the business of the New York state government. In addition, we have The Little Rebellion e-zine and various other pre-professional production pieces.
The department offers the college's only distinguished visiting professorship and has had three Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and best-selling authors on campus to teach classes. Digital Media and Journalism students and faculty have earned regional, state and national awards for journalism, documentaries and public service announcements.
