Starting the Semester Right: Eight Ways to Succeed From the Start

Starting the Semester Right: Eight Ways to Succeed From the Start

  1. Supply yourself! Textbooks and school supplies can get pricey, but they’re a vital part of academic life. Whether you’re buying your supplies or sharing with someone else, make sure you have what you need to succeed this school year.

  2. Be prepared. Having your textbooks is just the first step; make sure to read them and complete your assignments before heading to class.

  3. Go to class. You can’t expect to succeed by studying someone else’s notes -- go to class and participate.

  4. Stay organized. Get your hands on a planner to keep track of assignments, appointments and important events.

  5. Attend a workshop. The Psychological Counseling Center provides an academic success program, which offers periodic workshops. [www.newpaltz.edu/counseling]

  6. Get help! If you see that you’re having trouble with a particular class, get a tutor.

  7. Have fun! Academics are a large part of college life, but not the only part; make sure to take time out for yourself and spend time with friends. Check the events page for fun things to do around campus.

  8. Join a club. An easy way to get to know the campus better is to join a club. Each year, student organizations hold general interest meetings. Find an organization that interests you and attend its meeting.
