Choosing the Best Schedule for You

By Sharon Feder '06

The spring 2006 schedule of classes is out and now it's up to you to decide what to take. Creating a new schedule of classes can be tricky, especially when you're in the middle of an entirely different semester. Here are some tips to make the process a little simpler:

1. Check your requirements
Print a copy of your college progress report, which can be found on my.newpaltz.edu. By reviewing the document, you'll be able to see what general education requirements you've fulfilled and what requirements you have left.

If you've already declared your major, check your specific degree requirements to see what classes you still have to take. Many departments have this information listed on their Web site.

2. Review the schedule of classes
View next semester's course offerings and look for classes that you are interested in taking that will fulfill your requirements.

3. Make a draft schedule
List the classes you've chosen as well as backups and go to my.newpaltz.edu and download the planning worksheet (see "Planning My.Next Semester" in the alert box), which will allow you to see what your semester would look like with the classes you've chosen.

4. Make an appointment with your advisor
When you meet with your advisor, bring your progress report and draft schedule with you. After the two of you have discussed your selections, your advisor will give you your ARN number, which will enable you to register online.

5. Remember to register!
Go to my.newpaltz.edu to get your registration date and time (see My.Time Assignment). Remember to register for classes at your assigned time, so you have a better chance of getting into the classes you want.
