Distance learning or distance education is a way of delivering instruction over a distance where the learner and instructor are apart, but interact via technology. This technology can include the World Wide Web, e-mail, videoconferencing, audio conferencing, videotapes, cable television, satellite broadcast, etc.
How is SUNY New Paltz using distance learning?
SUNY New Paltz currently employs two distance education modalities. They include asynchronous learning (online courses via the Internet) and two-way interactive video .
Asynchronous Learning (online courses)
There are many names for this type of delivery; some of them include internet courses; web courses; online courses, ALNs, etc. SUNY New Paltz offers a variety of courses using this innovative delivery approach. In an online course the instructor and students communicate with each other through a computer and the Internet. Using a computer, students receive course materials, compose and submit assignments, ask questions of the instructor, interact with other students in the class, discuss issues and actively participate in class activities from home, office, or the nearest campus computer lab. As an "asynchronous" learning mode, instructors and students are able to connect with the Internet, and transmit and receive information anytime and anyplace.
Participation in these courses requires access to the World Wide Web (WWW) either through a campus computer lab or at home using an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
New Paltz online courses follow the same academic calendar in terms of start and end dates of classes as the on-campus courses.

Using the SLN, it is possible to take several courses through different schools in the same semester. For more specific information about the SUNY Learning Network, visit their Web site.
SUNY New Paltz offers online courses using our own servers and tech support. Both courses offered through the SLN and through New Paltz offer students a variety of courses and interests. Visit the SUNY New Paltz Academic Computing Web site for more information.
SUNY New Paltz offers some courses using fully interactive two-way video/audio.
