About the Classroom Technology Institute (CTI)

CTI offers graduate-level courses each summer session. Courses teach effective, creative, and appropriate ways to integrate technology into the K-12 curriculum. Courses are hands-on in the computer labs; however, objectives go beyond the technology itself to emphasize instruction and integration. Classes cover such topics as enhancing instruction using emerging technologies, integrating technology into the curriculum, evaluating the benefits of software applications, and understanding the impact of technology on teaching and learning.

Summer Session 2008 Classes

EDI593.01 Google Applications for Teachers

Free online web applications in the classroom will be explored and multiple online authoring tools will be used to create computer-based instructional materials. Design, development, and formative evaluation of objectives-based instructional materials for students will be explored and teachers will learn how to better incorporate educational technology in the K-12 classroom. The course will also include best-practices classroom management techniques to be discussed throughout lab assignments. Online web applications include: Blogger, Google & YouTube Video, Google Calendar, Picasa photo-editor, Google Documents, Google Earth, Google Sketchup and others.

EDI593.02 Digital Storytelling and the New Technologies

Digital Storytelling is a unique medium that fuses the ancient power of storytelling with the most innovative use of the new technologies to showcase the written word with photos, video and music. Create digital stories, investigate recent research in the field, experiment with online tools used in collaborative projects and reflect on the process. Consider how these tools might be used to motivate students at all grade levels.

EDI593.03  SMART Board Technology for Educators

Interactive whiteboards are increasingly becoming an important tool for classroom instruction. Teachers can create effective presentations that are designed for diverse learners. Properly designed lessons can be interactive and student-centered. They are also useful as a tool for distance learning. Participants in this class will be introduced to the interactive whiteboard, its uses and associated resources. They will also be challenged to create a series of teaching and learning activities using an interactive SMART Board.
