Group Counseling

Group counseling provides an opportunity for students to discuss common concerns with other students, with an aim toward personal growth and change. Under the guidance of the group facilitator(s), members support one another, explore personal concerns, share feedback, and challenge one another to develop healthier interpersonal skills.

Research indicates that group therapy can be especially effective for student issues, and the Psychological Counseling Center (PCC) typically schedules several groups every semester. Each therapy group usually has three to eight student members, with one or two facilitators. Groups typically meet once each week for about 90 minutes, through the semester.

Some students express concern about the confidentiality of group therapy. PCC staff expect participants in group therapy to maintain ethical and responsible standards of confidentiality concerning others' participation in the group. New Paltz students have done very well in respecting and protecting group members' privacy, and generally find it very supportive to know other people in the campus community who share their struggles.

If you are interested in joining one of our groups, discuss your interest during your PCC intake, or call the PCC at 845-257-2920 to schedule a brief screening appointment with the group facilitator. Unless otherwise indicated, our groups meet in the Psychological Counseling Center's conference room.
