Group counseling offers an opportunity for students to discuss their concerns with students who have common concerns and are striving towards personal growth and change. Under the guidance of the group leader, members support one another, explore personal concerns, share feedback with each other, and take the risks to develop healthier interpersonal skills.
Some students express concern about the confidentiality of group therapy. We expect participants in group therapy to maintain standards of confidentiality concerning others' participation in the group. Students have done very well in protecting each other's privacy, and generally find it very supportive to know other people at New Paltz who share their concerns.
If you are interested in joining any of the groups described below, call the PCC at 257-2920 to set up an interview with the group leader. Unless otherwise indicated, our groups meet in the Counseling Center's group room 213.
Co-ed General Psychotherapy Group: This group is for students coping with a variety of common concerns including, but not limited to, relationship problems with friends or significant others, concerns with family, stress/anxiety, feeling down, loneliness and intimacy issues. It provides a confidential and safe environment to explore emotions, discuss concerns, and receive feedback from peers who are struggling with similar concerns. Through direct and honest feedback you will develop insight into your interpersonal style and the ways in which this impacts your social and psychological well being. The group has between five and eight members and runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes once a week. Call PCC at 25702920 to set up a brief meeting with Mark Balaban, Ph.D. to discuss the group and to ask any questions you may have.
Women of Color Group: A multicultural support group to facilitate discussion and resolution of psychological, cultural, social, emotional and political issues related to personal and academic success. This group has on-going enrollment. Contact the PCC at 257-2920 to speak with Gwen Lloyd, D.S.W. and to ask any questions about the group.
Women's Psychotherapy Group: This group offers female students an opportunity to come together and work through personal challenges in a confidential, caring and supportive environment. Through discussion, exploration and problem solving of struggles, and their accompanying emotions, thoughts and actions, members will learn to be more effective and satisfied in their lives. Group members will learn to give sensitive and honest feedback and thereby come to understand themselves, their environments, and others on deeper levels. Please call PCC at 257-2920 to set up a brief meeting with Ziva Bar-Chaim, Psy. D., to discuss the group and ask questions you may have.
