Services
The PCC offers a variety of services to the campus community ranging from individual and group counseling to campus-wide educational programs that contribute not only to the growth of individual students, but also to the benefit of academic programs in related disciplines, to campus life, and to the educational/cultural life of the region.
The college years are an exciting and challenging time of life. While opportunities for growth are many, so too, are the obstacles that may arise. PCC services are committed to promoting personal growth and helping students with personal difficulties that may interfere with their social development and academic progress. Students often come to the PCC with the kinds of concerns listed below:
- adjusting to college life
- issues of diversity and culture
- relationship difficulties
- depression and anxiety
- concern about self-esteem
- sexual concerns
- problems with eating habits
- worries about a friend
- alcohol and other substance issues
- death of a loved one
- gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender issues
- suicidal thoughts
- coping with traumatic events such as sexual assault
- uncertainties about personal values/beliefs
- developing one's identity
- test anxiety and writing blocks
In some circumstances, students may feel that their lives are so affected by difficulties like these that they consider withdrawing from college temporarily, or quitting altogether. The services and resources that the PCC provides can enable students to work through these difficulties and stay in college.
The PCC functions within the Division of Student Affairs and is located in the Student Health and Counseling Center. The PCC is staffed by doctoral-level clinical and counseling psychologists, a doctoral social worker, MA and MSW graduate student trainees. These therapists not only possess general skills that are suited to fit the needs of students with various problems, but also possess specialized skills in counseling: rape/sexual-assault survivors, suicide, eating problems, multicultural issues, grief and bereavement, and more. The Center is a training site for MA in Counseling and MSW trainees who provide mental health counseling under supervision.
The PCC has received accreditation from the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc., an accrediting association for college and university counseling centers.
PCC client information is confidential within the American Psychological Association Ethical Standards, and New York state and SUNY legal guidelines.
