Deconstructing SUNY New Paltz Construction

Visual

This fall, an addition to the Student Union Building (SUB) will transform the courtyard between the existing SUB and Haggerty Administration Building (HAB). This project will not only reflect the college's commitment to the environment, but will also strengthen its commitment to meeting students' needs with the creation of conference and gathering spaces, an entertainment lounge and more.

Think Green!

  • Green elements provide a sustainable, high-performance building;
  • are designed to reduce energy consumption;
  • provide a healthy and enlightened interior environment.

Deconstructing - Students' Perception

Comfort Zone

New improvements to our residence halls are being completed to enhance your living and learning community. These include: fire sprinklers; window replacements; kitchenette renovations; and interior improvements.

Heat receptors

We're replacing the high temperature hot water lines to provide you with an environmentally friendly, reliable system for heating the campus. You'll see fenced areas...but don't worry. You'll still have safe access. Just look for the directional signs with the New Paltz hard hat!

  • All construction areas will be securely fenced.
  • Access points to and from all buildings will be provided and maintained.
  • We plan to have heat pipes back in service in the fall - just in time for those chilly fall nights!
  • The new system will provide energy-efficient heat to all buildings on campus for the next 30-40 years.

Forward Lobe

We're working on a Master Plan to map out the next 15 years of major construction projects on our campus, as well as walkways, parking and landscaping. The Master Plan will guide us in transforming our campus
into a park-like atmosphere. It will also give us the opportunity to focus on campus walkways, add more greenery to the campus interior, create new buildings to support sciences and student services, and improve our existing waterways. View the complete plan.

Old Main Musings

We're restoring a classic building on campus to its natural beauty, complete with modern enhancements and green elements. Did you know that Old Main, our oldest building on campus, was constructed after a fire devastated the original New Paltz Normal School building in 1906? Or that at one time, all college offices and classes were held in Old Main? Today it houses our School of Education.

While Old Main is under construction, all department and faculty offices normally located there will be moved to temporary locations throughout the campus. Check the online directory or call the Welcome Center for assistance in finding them. Phone numbers will not change.

Think Green!

The Old Main Building renovation will be one of the most environmentally friendly projects the campus has undertaken. It will be the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified project on our campus. Green elements will include:

  • water consumption reduction & efficiency;
  • over 10% more energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems than the baseline standards dictated by NYS Energy Code;
  • materials with recycled content will be incorporated into the new construction.
