Fantastic Media Day Event Planned for April 21st!
From the SUNY New Paltz Homepage (http://www.newpaltz.edu/news/news.cfm?id=4016):
A well-known television critic, a music writer and a former New York Times culture editor will highlight a panel of journalists who will discuss arts journalism in the age of the Internet at a forum at the State University of New York at New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in the college’s Honors Center.
The event, which is titled "'Dude, that RULEZ!' - Arts Journalism in the Age of the Internet" is free and open to the public.
The discussion will feature four accomplished writer and editors who shape the way arts is covered in America and will be moderated by New Paltz Professor Will Hermes, who is a frequent contributor to National Public Radio, The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Spin magazine.
“Arts journalism, like all journalism, is in a state of great change,” said Hermes who teaches a class on arts writing and criticism and is writing a book about New York City's music culture in the mid-1970s.
Newspapers and magazines are cutting back on serious arts reporting and laying off critics, he points out, but “at the same time, new forms and avenues of arts writing have exploded on the Web.” The forum is expected to discuss these developments.
The keynote speaker will be Joy Press who is culture editor at Salon, a well known online magazine. Before joining Salon, she served as the literary editor of the Village Voice and edited the Voice Literary Supplement (VLS). She has also been chief TV and book critic for the Voice.
Press edited "War of the Words: 20 Years of Writing on Contemporary Literature in the VLS" and co-wrote, with husband Simon Reynolds, "The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion and Rock 'n' Roll."
Joining Press will be Hua Hsu who has written about culture and politics for Slate, The New York Times, the Boston Globe Ideas section and the Village Voice, and Martin Gottlieb who was deputy culture editor for The New York Times for six years and is the former editor of the Village Voice.
Gottlieb is currently the James H. Ottaway visiting professor of journalism at New Paltz and has been an award-winning investigative reporter. Hsu recently joined the English Department at Vassar College.
The forum is sponsored by the college’s Department of Communication
and Media, which includes its programs in journalism, radio-television and
communication.

Odd Todd, Tuesday, November 6th at 6:30p.m., LC 102
According to Wikipedia, "Odd Todd is a website owned and operated by Todd Rosenberg, an unemployed "dotcommer", who has created a series of humorous Flash cartoons depicting the world of unemployment, after entering the world himself.
Rosenberg will be in the Lecture Center tonight to discuss about his wildly successful website and answer any questions that students may have. He will provide students with valuable insight for post-university life.
These animated shorts, written, drawn and narrated by Todd himself, encapsulate the trials and tribulations many people felt in Silicon Valley and its impacted markets after the dot com crash around 2001.
Rosenberg's first cartoon, Laid Off: A Day in the Life, shows the frustration, despair and boredom of a man in his 30's learning about how money is "kinda important" and dates are hard to attain when you're fat and balding.
The success of the first cartoon short led to more cartoons being posted for downloading, even the opportunity to contribute through an Internet "tip< cup." Rosenberg was collecting unemployment insurance at time that he put up his "tip cup", and when the New York State Department of Labor learned of the "tip cup", they sent him a letter demanding repayment of all paid unemployment benefits. Rosenberg successfully appealed this action and was not required to pay back any benefits.
Todd spread his cartoon wings away from the unemployment world and delved into fantasy cartoons such as his annual Halloween cartoon and his Christmas episodes.
As Rosenberg's fan base grew, so did the Odd Todd
website, which now includes such random material as
"What's Happening?", movie reviews, his search for
"Brittney Dirtor", "Daily Facts I Learned From the
TV", reader submitted poetry, recipes and more. A
predecessor to today's blogging craze, Odd Todd has
developed a healthy (if somewhat unique) following.
His What's Happening section is the most popular
section besides the cartoons."
This lead to a gift-economy life style, that made Todd a very popular on-line figure. He has created a number of characters associated with his online persona, and also wrote a book: Hard Times, Soft Couch.
His animations can now be seen on comedycentral.com, and on ABC.
Please attend! And let your classes know.
www.oddtodd.com (Note: There's some sophomoric humor
here and there in the cartoons, but nothing too
outlandish).

The first version of the Communication & Media Society forum has arrived. I hope that, in the near future, we'll be able to upgrade to a better ad-free forum that we'll have 100% complete control over and will match the site perfectly. Our first field trip to CBS' Early Show was certainly a bonding experience. Getting up at 5:00am and traveling together gave everyone who went a feeling of unity. We were disappointed to learn that our tour of the CBS studio was cancelled due to a James Taylor concert, however, this did not break our spirits. We decided to go to NBC and view the outside taping of their Today Show. We visited Rockefeller Center and New York City's christmas tree. After much walking and talking and searching, we got some pizza and discussed the future of our new Society. Wait for Pictures!
Perhaps we will make a second attempt of CBS' studios in the future. We all feel that they owe it to us! There will certainly be updates about this in the future. Hope you all had a good time!
Thursday, November 16th, 2006
Thursday's meeting was a huge success. The turn out was so good people were almost standing in the hallway. Chairs filled up quickly. The refreshments were enjoyed by all. Many excellent ideas for fundraisers were discussed, as well as ideas for the web page. It was decided that a temporary facebook club would be used to contact members and to continue discussion in between meetings. Everyone enjoyed waxing intellectual about common interests and eating pizza, brownies, and potato chips. Thanks to everyone that showed up! See you soon!
