Chemistry Club members Erik Van Vlack and Amber Aslam made their way into the SUNY New Paltz General Chemistry lectures this month to demonstrate to students the concept of quantization of energy. They used a home-built flame emission spectrometer to capture specific wavelengths of light from electron decay in sodium and potassium ions present in salt solutions. While electron decay from sodium ions appears yellow in the Bunsen burner, the potassium ions give rise to a beautiful purple color, as shown in the picture. Photo courtesy of Shaun Ben Ari
