Infrared Analysis of Automobile Exhaust in Instrumental Analysis

04/06/2009

The Instrumental Analysis class (taught by Dr. Megan Ferguson) is a core course for both the Chemistry and Environmental Geochemical Science majors.  This course is a combination of theory and practice where the students learn how modern chemical instrumentation works and analyze a variety of samples using instrumental methods.  The pictures below are from an experiment in which the students collected samples of automobile exhaust immediately after starting the engine and later after the engine had warmed up.  The students used infrared spectroscopy to analyze for carbon monoxide (CO) in the exhaust.
