What happens when we “let there be light”?

Prof. Frantz Andersen and his students monitor a reaction in the organic lab. In this experiment, the students use light to initiate the reaction between elemental bromine and 2,3-dimethylbutane as shown below. The students will determine the product of the reaction using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
