Liza Valdivia explains her research poster at the Boston ACS meeting
Three Senior chemistry majors, Darren Ceckanowicz, Corinne Szewcyk, and Liza Valdivia and two faculty from the Chemistry Department, Pamela St. John and Dan Freedman, recently attended the 234th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston. Approximately 15,000 chemists attended the meeting. All three students presented posters describing research they have carried out at SUNY New Paltz with Professors St. John and Freedman.
Corrine’s research described work that she and Professor St. John have done on the “Thermodynamic studies of LNA in DNA hairpins”, Darren and Professor St. John’s poster detailed work on “Surface modifications to silica for oligonucleotide attachment”. Liza’s poster described studies that she and Professor Freedman have carried out on the “Transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone catalyzed by ruthenium-arene complexes with ß-diketonate and ß-ketoiminate ligands”. Professor Freedman also gave a talk titled “Preparation of inorganic ruthenium complexes from organometallic ruthenium-arene precursors” which included contributions from 12 current and former New Paltz undergraduate chemistry majors.
The majority of undergraduate chemistry majors at SUNY New Paltz engage in individual research projects with faculty and present the results of their work at local, regional, and national
conferences.
