Iron Analysis in Honors General Chemistry Lab
09/09/2009
This year for the first time, the Chemistry Department is offering an Honors section of the General Chemistry 1. Students will engage in multi-week experiments using sophisticated equipment. In the pictures below, the students are preparing solutions to analyze for the amount of iron in an iron tablet. Next week, they will analyze their favorite foods for iron content. Some of the other experiments to be done this semester include: 1) Preparing biodiesel from vegetable oil and measuring the heat of combustion using bomb calorimetry. 2) Preparing an organic light emitting diode. 3) Preparing a nanocrystalline titanium dioxide solar cell. 4) Building a flame emission spectrometer and using it to determine sodium and potassium content in sports drinks.
