Facilities

The facilities offer spacious studios that serve all undergraduate classes. They are well equipped, well-ventilated and designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of both the students and the curriculum. This new, state of the art facility is outfitted with a full range of ceramic equipment that is essential to clay fabrication and all aspects of surface development and firing.

All enrolled students work with faculty, technical staff and majors to experience various aspects of glaze formulation, loading and firing kilns. A broad range of materials for testing and experimentation are available for students use on an as needed basis. The facilities are accessible to all enrolled students once they have been properly instructed in the safe use of equipment. Woodfiring, soda firing and other primitive firing techniques are available to students along with electric and gas kilns A list of studio equipment follows.

BFA Ceramic majors have greater access to the independent use of equipment. BFA students are given studio space in an effort to support a regular and on-going engagement with their work. Majors are taught general studio practice and share in the overall responsibilities of studio operation. This provides valuable and practical experience in the maintenance and operation of complex studio facilities. Majors are encouraged through experimentation to test/work with whatever materials they are interested in. As well, they assume responsibility for making their own clay and glazes.
