The program in ceramics is structured to support the personal and creative inquiry that is unique to each student. Our emphasis is upon identifying and developing perspectives, characteristics, and abilities specific to the individual. We encourage the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and students whose motivation is to achieve their fullest potential through the expression of their own point of view. We provide an environment which encourages this inquiry, whether the format is functional, sculptural, or conceptual. As faculty, we see our role as facilitators, challenging students to think, to speak, and to make work that reflects their personal vision.

The faculty works with students helping to provoke and inspire the discipline, work ethic, and integrity necessary to articulate a unique and personal expression. Our commitment is in support of the student, and to this end we offer a curriculum which fosters the student's independent exploration and growth. Critical to the student's success is the regular communication and discussion of ideas and work which occurs in the studio community. Faculty support and encourage participation in student-governed groups. These enhance the educational experience. Both the Clay Club, and the Student Art Alliance are groups organized and run by students. These groups initiate such activities as: visits to artist's studios, gallery & museum trips, attending national & regional conferences, and a regular lecture series of nationally recognized artists.
