The Legacy of Heinz Meng

During his 50-year career at SUNY New Paltz, Heinz Meng—wildlife conservationist, educator, falconer, and artist— introduced countless students to the natural majesty of the Hudson Valley and led the effort to save one of the region’s most inspiring avian predators from the brink of extinction.

His legacy lives on in the peregrine falcons that soar over the Shawangunk Mountains, and in the educational mission of the College’s Department of Biology.

You can help SUNY New Paltz continue his work by supporting the Heinz Meng Environmental and Conservation Education Fund.

Help us:

  • Conserve and interpret his study collections of over 5,000 preserved specimens of Hudson Valley flora, birds, and mammals. Your gift supports student interns working with these specimens, digitizing the collection to make it more widely accessible to scholars and educators.
  • Share new knowledge through interpretive exhibits displayed in Coykendall Science Building (CSB), adjacent to the lecture hall where Dr. Meng’s falcons, owls, and hawks swooped through the classroom, inspiring generations of citizen scientists and scholars. CSB is just 100 yards from where Meng released the first peregrines bred in captivity.
  • Explore new frontiers in conservation biology and environmental education through an annual lecture, bringing to the Hudson Valley leading scientists whose work is shaping the future of climate science and ecology.

Make a commitment now for conservation science!
Your pledge will help us create a robust and dynamic response to the growing need for both environmental education and the kind of inspired and innovative thinking that Heinz Meng brought to the challenges facing our local ecosystems and our planet. Through your gifts to the Dr. Heinz K. Meng Environmental and Conservation Education Fund, the SUNY New Paltz Department of Biology will continue a legacy connecting young people, students, and the wider Hudson Valley community with the natural world.

Please consider a gift at one of the levels listed below.
The names of each of the gift levels represent the historic peregrine nesting sites in the Shawangunk Mountains. Or consider a pledge to be given over five years. For example, gifts of $1,000 per year over five years would be a total pledge of $5,000, qualifying you as a Millbrook Cliff donor to the Meng Environmental and Conservation Education Fund. Please enclose your first payment with this pledge.

SUNY New Paltz gratefully acknowledges our partners at the Mohonk Preserve and Mohonk Mountain House who have helped guide this project and showcase the work and legacy of Professor Heinz Meng.
