Finals Week, Fall 2010
12/16/2010

Winter seems to be a little ahead of schedule, with ice where it usually doesn't form until late December. As students prepare to take their exams and leave town, we want to say "goodbye" to one of our own: Dr. Carol Rietsma is retiring after....well, let's just say we will miss her. Although she will still be teaching Ecology for us next semester.

On December 15th, Biology faculty and staff celebrated Dr. Rietsma's retirement with a brunch at New Paltz Village Tea Room. Many new and old friends were there....

Dr. Heinz Meng (Emeritus) and Dr. Hon Ho (both here when Carol started), and Dr's Jeff Reinking and Jennifer Waldo.

Dr. Rietsma's BFF's, Chris DeLap (left) and Dr. Peter Brown (right).

Dr. Rietsma (standing) addresses her colleagues, as Dr. Maureen Morrow (left) fiddles with her napkin. Dr's. Rietsma and Morrow are regularly mistaken for each other by students (and some faculty). No doubt that will continue.

Dr. Meng offers pointers on "retirement"; Dr. Spencer Mass, Arnold Nemerofsky and .. (sorry) the right quadrant of Dr. Denis Moran's head listen in. (Dr. Moran retired last year and the only way we could get him to a retirement party was if Carol retired and he came to her party. So, Congrats to Denis, too!)

Dr. Jennifer Waldo (we thank for organizing this get-together) and Dr. David Richardson (our newest faculty member): and Jason Valens, director of the General Biology labs and (sorry), the right 3 quadrants of the department secretary, Ms. June Koenig's face. (The Village Tea Room is not that big so even with a cell phone camera, it is hard to get far enough back. Not shown: Dr. Nolen, "photographer".)

This Fall's Ecology class says "Thanks, Dr. Rietsma!"
Happy Holidays everyone! (Darn, it is cold!).
