Biology Story

Things are really developing in Dr. Mass' Developmental Biology lab. (Our student labs really are hands on.)

03/02/2010

Aruba Iqbal with a sea urchin in the Developmental Bio lab. A sea urchin about to be induced to spawn (don't they need privacy?)

Deirdre Challan fertilizing sea urchin eggs (in vitro). Keith Walker observing zygote cleavage under the compound microscope.

Some students' photomicrographs, at various magnifications:

Cleavage -- two cell sea urchin embryos (L). Early Cleavage showing a two cell and a four cell embryo and several unfertilized eggs (R).

Four and Eight Cell Embryos (L). Sea urchin pluteus larvae -- soon these will metamorphose into young adult urchins (R). These looks just like in the textbook, only better!
