Registration Information: March 28, 2007
"On your marks..." All of our current and past students have been created in Banner. Their basic information - semesters of registration, major code, advisors, and total credits, and GPA were all brought over the beginning of this month. Students now can have multiple types of advisors - Major, Concentration, Education, Academic, and EOP. The Schedule of Classes for summer and fall have been built in Banner and have been reviewed by the departments and Deans.
"Get Ready....." Student ARN assignments were run on the old system and have been available via my.newpaltz for the past couple of weeks. These ARNs, known in Banner as "Alternate PINs" have been brought over into Banner. Student HOLD records, everything from past due accounts and missing health forms, have been copied over into Banner. We have created the registration time assignment periods as before based on total credits. N.B. We have not brought a student's academic history over into Banner as of yet, so DARS reports and internal transcripts will continue to run on the old system.
"Get Set..." This is the period of time where students will be visiting their adviser, building a class schedule, and awaiting their time slot to register. There are a number of things to remember:
When you meet with students and work out a course schedule, have the student write down not only the course and section number but also the CRN. The CRN is a unique 4 digit number assigned to each section, and that is what Banner will ask for when the students register. If they have the CRN, registration will go more quickly.
- check the courses to make sure that they don't have restrictions that would block the student from registering. To do this, you will have to drill down into the "Detailed Class Information". The "Special Approval" of PI or PC, or restrictions as to major or class (freshmen are blocked from 400 level courses, etc.). You can view a section's detailed information including restrictions by clicking on the CRN.
- Department secretaries and Chairs have received training in Banner forms and will be able to use SFASRPO to enter registration permits in advance a student's pre-registration. For departments not entering their own permissions, you can still send students over to the Records and Registration office with a PI card.
For this pre-registration, prerequisites (required courses and math levels) will not be enforced. We are only part way through entering coursework taken at previous institutions. However, all other restrictions will be enforced.
When you give a student permission to register for a course that has restrictions, you are not guaranteeing them a seat but only suspending the restrictions (majors only, special approval, etc.). This is different than the old system, where a 'PI' was like a "get-out-of-jail-free" card.
For this pre-registration, there will be some new features. Cross listed courses now appear under their own course numbers in the cross-listed subject and Banner will pool the registrations in these sections to manage the total enrollment; separate lectures and labs can be 'linked' so that students will need to take one of each; co-requisites, even multiple co-requisites, will be enforced.
