Asia in the Classroom
A Workshop on China
for Teachers
A workshop for
elementary and secondary teachers who address curricula in Global History and
Geography and Communities around the World will take place Friday, October 17, 2003 in Amherst,
New York, just north of Buffalo. The workshop is jointly sponsored by the
Asian Studies Program at the University at Buffalo
and Buffalo/Niagara WorldConnect’s International
Education Center. Funding is provided by the Association for
Asian Studies and the John R. Oishei Foundation.
The event will
begin at 8:00 a.m. with registration
and an interactive presentation on Beijing
opera by a troupe from Beijing. Later in the morning, attendees will choose
between sessions on State and Society in China
and Chinese Myths and Legends. In the
afternoon panels of teachers will present “Best Practices” for communicating to
students about China
and Asia in the secondary and elementary
classrooms. Teachers may also attend a
performance of Beijing opera that
evening at the University at Buffalo’s
Center for the Arts.
The workshop
takes place in conjunction with the annual meeting of the New York Conference
on Asian Studies. Workshop participants
may attend sessions of the conference at no additional charge on the afternoon
of October 17 and all day Saturday, October 18.
Pre-registration
is required. The $25 registration fee
