The New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS) will be held at The
College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York 12203 October 19-21,
2000.
The theme of the Conference is:
"Asian Discourses Before And After Western Colonization
And
In The Next Millennium."
The theme would explore the past values in Asian societies prior to
Orientalism, Eurocentrism, and Westernization. Have the latter constructed
a new context that has led to the reimagining of cultural and ethnic
identities (ethnic nationalism, for instance?) due to acculturation to
post colonial and post modern modes of thought and with what consequences
in the next millennium? How these post colonial and post modern values
would be reimagined in the next millennium? Panels and papers addressing
these and other issues will be welcomed.
A Teachers’ Training Workshop on the theme will be held on October 19,
2000. For further information and proposals please send your name,
institutional affiliation, address, phone number, e-mail address and an
abstract of one page by May 15, 2000. E-mail to: refais@mail.strose.edu or by mail
to: Shahid Refai, The College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York 12203.
