"Asian Discourses Before and After Western Colonization and in the Next Millennium"

Hosted by The College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York

October 20-21, 2000

A comprehensive liberal arts college nestled in an uptown neighborhood of Albany, New York, The College of Saint Rose is pleased to host the 2000 meetings of the New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS). Situated in the heart of upstate New York near the junction of the historic Hudson and Mohawk river valleys, Albany is located near the intersection of Interstates 87, 88, and 90; it is easily accessible by car, train, or plane.

This year’s theme, Asian Discourses Before and After Western Colonialism and in the Next Millennium, focuses the attention of presenters and participants on many important subjects and relationships of global interest regarding Asian economic, political, social, cultural, and historical issues.

Highlights of the NYCAS 2000 program include the keynote address by Dr. Peter Duus, Professor of History at Stanford University and president of the Association for Asian Studies; award of an honorary degree to India’s former Prime Minister, the Honorable Inder Kumar Gujral, followed by his plenary address on India’s nuclear program; approximately 27 scholarly panels and roundtables; a world class exhibition of the sculptures of Isamu Noguchi; Indian, Chinese, and Japanese cultural performances; a public lecture by internationally renowned Indian artist, M. F. Hussain; a Saturday evening Grand Finale to mark the millennial celebration of the NYCAS meetings; and a teachers’ (K-12) workshop on the theme, "Orientalism, Eurocentrism, and Asian Stereotypes in American Texts and Asian Puppetry." The teachers’ workshop will be held on Thursday evening, October 19th and will include dinner at the India Palace, an Indian restaurant adjacent to The College of Saint Rose campus.
