23199 Chinese Calligraphy This course introduces students to the structure and principles of character script, which has historically formed the basis for written communication throughout East Asia. Instruction in different calligraphic styles is combined with hands-on training in using the brush and ink, and ample practice in producing balanced characters, guided closely by the instructor. Experience in Chinese or Japanese language study is welcome, but not required. (1 credit) AS-ARTS

23201 Intermediate Chinese 1 Continued study of spoken Mandarin and written Chinese for those completing 23102, or who have the equivalent knowledge. (4 credits) GE3-FLNG ASL
23202 Intermediate Chinese 2 Continued study of spoken Mandarin and written Chinese for those completing 23201 or who have the equivalent knowledge. (4 credits) GE3-FLNG ASL
23310 Spoken Mandarin A course specifically designed for native speakers of a Chinese language other than Mandarin who can read and write Chinese, and for students who have completed 23202. Content stresses discussion of contemporary issues in the PRC and Taiwan. Techniques of formal public speeches and debate are practiced extensively. (3 credits UD) GE3-FLNG ASL
