NEW PALTZ, NY -- Wednesday, December 8 Lecture Center 112, 7pm free

Fred Wilson is an artist who often works with museum collections in order to present forgotten or repressed cultural histories. In 1992 he collaborated with The Contemporary, a museum in Baltimore, and The Maryland Historical Society to create his award-winning project, Mining the Museum. Using artifacts, Wilson illustrated how museums are not neutral places-exhibitions are informed by the curatorial biases and acquisition histories of their particular institutions, which often, intentionally or not, exclude the viewpoints of minorities. "Mining the Museum" vividly explores how African and Native American history is omitted from the institutional record.
