Undergraduate

Students who wish to major in art education must apply and be accepted to the Art Education program. Admission requirements include: Acceptance to SUNY New Paltz and to the Art Department, minimum of 2.75 GPA, and successful completion of the Art Education Application, submitted by the appropriate fall or spring deadline (March 15 for fall admissions, October 15 for Spring admissions). Applications are reviewed by art education faculty shortly after these dates. Applicants are notified of the decision by mail shortly after faculty review.

Most students apply to the Art Education Program while enrolled in the required introductory course, Foundations of Art Education, usually taken in the first semester of the Junior year. Freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students who plan to major in art education are strongly advised to become Pre-majors in Art Education as soon as they arrive on campus so that they are assigned an art education advisor who will help them plan their courses each semester. Students who do not gain acceptance to the Art Education Program are not eligible to register for the remaining sequential art education courses that are required for majors.

The Art Education Program no longer has an alternate route certification program. Students seeking the New York State Initial Teaching Certificate for Art Pre-K - 12 may opt to enroll as second degree students in the B.S. in Art Education degree program. This requires application to the College, Art Department, and Art Education Program. Second degree students must apply and be accepted to the Art Education Program (as well as to the College and Art Department) prior to enrolling in 10190 Foundations of Art Education.

Graduate

The Art Education Graduate Program leads to the degree of Master of Science in Art Education, and to Professional teaching certification in Visual Art Pre-K - 12 for those students working in New York State under Initial art teacher certification. As a pre-requisite for admission, applicants must possess Initial teaching certification for Visual Art Pre-K - 12 in New York State or a certificate to teach art from another state in the U.S.

The Graduate Program in Art Education does not lead to Initial teaching certification for people with undergraduate degrees in art studio, art history, or other areas. Prospective students who have earned a bachelor's degree in studio art, art history, or another area and who wish to become art teachers may apply as second degree students to the Undergraduate Art Education Program. For further information, contact the Art Education Program Office at 845-257-3850.

Application to the Graduate Art Education Program is through the Graduate School at SUNY New Paltz. All application forms, procedures, and deadlines can be found in the Graduate Catalogue. Only one course (3 credits) taken prior to formal acceptance to the Art Education Graduate Program may be applied to the student's program of study. Within the first 6 credits of graduate study, students must enroll in 10701 Seminar in Art Education and complete an approved Graduate Plan of Study for the completion of the degree program.
