Curriculum

Class size is small (15-25 students) to allow for direct and ongoing classroom engagement with faculty in art education, art studio, and art history. Most courses in the Visual Arts Education curriculum are taught by full-time faculty members who are extremely active professionally as artists, writers, researchers, curators, guest teachers in schools, educational consultants, and speakers at professional conferences. Visiting artists and art educators who teach additional courses in the program provide new perspectives and ideas within the art education curriculum.

The Art Education program was awarded a Special Citation in 2007 by the New York State Art Teachers Association for its innovative and collaborative partnership with NYSATA Region 7. Each spring, SUNY-New Paltz and NYSATA-7 sponsor a Symposium for Art Educators on the SUNY-New Paltz campus. Nationally recognized speakers on topics that range from collaborations with museums and contemporary art to working with students with special needs and talents, attract an audience of nearly 150 art education students and practicing art teachers.

Within the program, there is a very active student chapter of the National Art Education Association. They hold chapter meetings twice a month and present workshops and volunteer for service activities on campus and in the community. Many of these students belong to the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) as well; and they attend regional, state, and national professional conferences.
