Career History

Professor Papaelias is active professionally, collaborating with artists, small businesses and non-profits on design for page and screen.

Professor Papaelias was previously assistant professor of graphic design in the BFA program at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut and was an adjunct instructor at Marist College.

Teaching Interests

She teaches a variety of coursework, ranging from basic 2D design principles to advanced interaction design.

Research/Creative Activity

In her creative research, Professor Papaelias develops experimental typography and visual representations of speech that challenge the arbitrary relationship between visual and verbal communication. A variety of tools are utilized, including font-editing software, handwriting samples, voice recordings, post-structuralist theory, sociolinguistics, and voice recognition technology.


projects have been recognized in a variety of online and print publications (including Print, Communication Arts,,, and have been used by developers at Microsoft and Adobe to demonstrate the capabilities of OpenType technology. She has presented her creative and pedagogical work at several national venues including TypeCon 2005, 2007, 2012, AIGA Design Educators Conference 2007, and UCDA Education Summit.
