Mission
The Foundations experience prepares students to examine their own roles as critical thinkers, makers, and participants in visual culture, providing a basis for continued study in all areas of art and design. Foundations integrates a rigorous year-long curriculum in traditional and contemporary methods to challenge assumptions while developing formal skills and material sensibilities. Students are exposed to diverse concepts and practices in an immersive community environment. Creative risk is encouraged through individual projects and thematic collaboration, developing cross-media engagement and promoting an examination of personal and social responsibility.
Structure
Foundations provides students the opportunity to fully investigate a wide range of artistic mediums before deciding on a major course of study. In the Sophomore year, building on the prior knowledge and expertise gained in Foundations, art majors choose to apply for a BFA program in a specific art or design area or to continue for a BA/BS in Visual Arts, designated as either Interdisciplinary or Concentration. Students can choose one of the following Majors or Concentrations: art education, ceramics, graphic design, metals, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking or sculpture.
