The Department of Anthropology maintains an archaeology laboratory for curation and analysis of artifacts collected in excavations conducted by our Archaeological Field School, and for the processing of private collections that have been donated to museums.

With special permission, and with consultation with faculty, anthropology majors with archaeological experience are able to participate in an internship program in museology at the New York State Museum in Albany. This program provides participants with increased training in archaeological curational techniques, and with experience in selected aspects of museum management.

New Paltz students with an interest in anthropology have organized an Anthropology Club that engages in activities such as organizing trips to museums, exploring opportunities for graduate study and employment in anthropology, sponsoring speakers and films and having parties. The Anthropology Club and its functions are opened to all New Paltz students.

We encourage students to study abroad, particularly in non-Western societies, and we provide them with academic credit toward the major for relevant courses that they take in these Study Abroad Programs. In the recent past, students in our degree programs have participated in overseas programs in China, Viet Nam, Spain and Tanzania.
