General Education III Requirements

The General Education III Program was developed collaboratively by the faculty and students of SUNY New Paltz. It reflects the mission and characteristics of the college and an appreciation for the changing conditions of knowledge, pedagogy, and the contemporary world. The requirement for a system-wide set of general education requirements went into effect for students matriculating into the SUNY system for fall 2000 or later. One course in each of the following ten content categories is required of students graduating from any SUNY school.

Composition I (COMP) Composition II (COMP)
Arts (ARTS) Humanities (HUM)
Math (MATH) Natural Science (NSCI) 2 semesters
Social Science (SSCI) Foreign Language (FLNG) 2 semesters
World Civilization and Cultures (WRLD) United States Studies (USST)
Cultural Diversity (DIVR) Western Civilization (WEST)

General Education courses considered satisfied at another SUNY and or CUNY institution will be considered met at SUNY New Paltz.

A maximum of 70 credits will transfer from a two-year school and a maximum of 90 credits will be accepted in transfer for students who have attended a four-year school.

All students who have a bachelor's degree will transfer 90 credits and the SUNY-wide General Education requirements and SUNY New Paltz native general education requirements are considered met.

A.A. or A.S degree holders who transfer after receiving a degree from a SUNY or CUNY institution are considered to have met SUNY New Paltzs native general education requirement, but not necessarily the SUNY-wide General Education requirement. The native general education courses include one semester of a Natural Science (NSCI), one semester of a Foreign Language (FLNG) and Cultural Diversity (DIVR). A.A. or A.S. degree earners will receive automatic waivers and will not have to complete these courses at New Paltz.

If you do not possess an A.A. or A.S. degree, you may still be eligible of automatic waivers of SUNY New Paltz's native general education requirements. The waivers will be applied based on the number of transfer credits awarded to you:

45-59 credits 1 semester of a Natural Science (NSCI)
60-74 credits 1 semester of a Natural Science (NSCI) and 1 semester of a Foreign Language (FLNG)
75 or more credits 1 semester of a Natural Science (NSCI), 1 semester of a Foreign Language (FLNG) and Cultural Diversity (DIVR)

Courses with grades of "D+" or lower are not accepted in transfer but can be used to satisfy a general education requirement.

Developmental and remedial course work does not transfer.
In addition, no credit can be awarded at the point of admission for credits earned at institutions, which have not been accredited by a regional accrediting agency of the American Council on Education.

The evaluation of transfer credits will be finalized and awarded only after official transcripts from all credit sources (college transcripts, test scores, military documents) have been received by the Office of Undergraduate Admission. PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO DO THIS BY THE MID POINT OF YOUR FIRST SEMESTER AT SUNY NEW PALTZ. If you have questions regarding your evaluation or outstanding transcripts, please call the Office of Undergraduate Admission at 845-257-3200 or email us at admissions@newpaltz.edu.
