Admissions Criteria

Transfer Admissions:
Evaluation and Awarding of Transfer Credit

An evaluation of previous college credit is provided to accepted candidates.

New Paltz allows for the transfer of a maximum of 70 academic credits from an accredited two-year college and a maximum of 90 academic credits from an accredited four-year college or a combination of accredited two-and four-year colleges. A maximum of 15 credits of nonliberal arts course work may be awarded in transfer. Developmental course work, as well as some religious course work, is NOT transferable.

Students earning an AA or AS degree from a SUNY or CUNY community college are considered to have met New Paltz’s General Education requirement. However, such AA or AS degree holders should be aware that they may not have met the SUNY mandated General Education requirements.

* No credit will be awarded at the point of enrollment for credits earned at institutions which are not accredited by a regional accrediting agency of the American Council on Education.

New Paltz will award credit for any course with a grade of “C” or better. Grades of "D" are not accepted in transfer.

Academic credit for the major is awarded only by the individual academic department.

A maximum of 15 non-liberal arts credits may be awarded to candidates who have taken course work within government agencies, the armed services or other collegiate and non-collegiate settings. A request for review of such coursework, supported by appropriate documentation, should be forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

An Important Note

The deadline for submission of all previous college work, including final transcripts, AP score reports, IB examination reports, CLEP score reports, and other pertinent transfer coursework, to the Office of Undergraduate Admission is the mid-point of the student’s first semester at New Paltz.
