Student writing was honored and shared on Thursday, May 2, at the sixth annual
"Celebration of Writing Day," sponsored by the SUNY New Paltz Writing
Board.
The event is designed for students to showcase their talents, writing abilities
and techniques.
Barbara Geider, vice president of Student Affairs, welcomed the audience of
about 30 students and faculty.
Jim Dembowski, a member of the Writing Board and associate professor of communication
disorders, emceed the event.
"If you cannot write it, then you do not know it," Dembowski said
of his love for writing. He then introduced the students, both graduate and
undergraduate, who read excerpts from their works.
Renee Day, dramatic writing major, began the readings with an excerpt from a
fantasy story. Other winners included Lee Riley for poetry, Katy Rodriguez for
creative fiction, Donna Bryan for memoir, graduate students Emily Watson and
Heidi Lowe for a paper written about the metals profession, Melanie Chopko for
memoir, Kendra Griffin for memoir, Adam Winters for essay, Anne-Marie Latargia

with an emotional poem about peace.
Tessey Jones, Matt Lucas, Melissa Sutton, Mohini Patel, Madhurima Anne, Daniel

for their work.
All of the participants who read at the event received certificates, however,
there were some who received special awards for their work. Tessey Jose received
an award for essay. Melissa Sutton, Donna Bryan, Melanie Chopko and Kendra Griffin
